Kyrgios assault case adjourned Down Under
Nick Kyrgios
Tennis star Nick Kyrgios didn't appear in an Australian court on Tuesday and had his case of common assault adjourned until Oct 4.
The 27-year-old Kyrgios, who was not required to attend the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates Court, was represented by his lawyer, Michael Kukulies-Smith. He was not required to enter a plea or apply for bail.
Kukulies-Smith asked for the case to be adjourned until Nov 25 but magistrate Louise Taylor rejected that request and scheduled it for Oct 4.
Kyrgios remains in the United States preparing for the US Open, which starts next week.
The charge relates to an incident in January of last year in Canberra that was reported to Australian Capital Territory Police in December. It reportedly involves his former girlfriend, Chiara Passari.
Kyrgios could be facing more legal action in Britain. A tennis fan who was temporarily removed from Centre Court during the men's Wimbledon final following a complaint by Kyrgios said Tuesday she is bringing defamation proceedings against him in a bid to clear her name.

League fines player for using 'gay' as insult
A soccer player judged to have used the word "gay" as an insult in a post-game interview was fined 2,000 Swiss francs ($2,070) by the Swiss Football League on Tuesday.
The league said its tribunal declined to suspend Lucerne goalkeeper Marius Mueller and judged that his words had been thoughtless but not homophobic.
Mueller, a 29-year-old German, criticized the play of his teammates in a television interview after a 4-1 loss against St. Gallen on Aug 13.
He and his club later apologized on social media and the league opened a disciplinary case.
Mueller's statement had not targeted a player, referee or spectator at the stadium, the league said, "but rather expressed frustration" at his teammates' inadequate defensive work.
Lucerne said Tuesday it accepted the verdict.
England midfielder Scott calls it quits
Jill Scott
England midfielder Jill Scott announced her retirement from soccer on Tuesday, the second member of the Euro 2022-winning team to do so in two days.
The 35-year-old Scott's decision comes after Ellen White, the team's record scorer, said Monday she was retiring. Both Scott and White played in the final of the Women's European Championship on July 31, when England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time.
Scott made her England debut in 2006. She made 161 international appearances-second only to Fara Williams with 172-and scored 27 goals for the Lionesses.
She had been without a club after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season.
"I may be saying my goodbyes to football, but we're going to make this a celebration. No sad faces!! We've had too much fun for any tears," Scott wrote on The Players' Tribune website.
West Ham swoops for Italy defender Emerson
West Ham signed Italy defender Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea in a deal worth a reported 15 million pounds ($18 million) on Tuesday.
Emerson has agreed a four-year contract with the Hammers, with the option of a further one-year extension.
The 28-year-old leftback was born in Brazil, but moved to Italy in 2014 and was eventually granted citizenship. He struggled to break into the Chelsea team in five years at Stamford Bridge and spent last season on loan at Lyon.
Emerson has won 27 caps for Italy and played in its win over England in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
"I'm very happy to be here and to arrive here. It's a big challenge for me, it's a big team, so I'm very happy to be here and I'm ready," Emerson told West Ham's website.
The Hammers have lost their first three Premier League games and are in last place, their worst start to a domestic season in 51 years.

Formula 1 chief says no more races in Russia
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said the sport has no plans to hold future races in Russia.
The Russian Grand Prix was scheduled to be held in Sochi this year before moving to Igora Drive in St. Petersburg in 2023, but F1 canceled the race after the Russia-Ukraine conflict. And Domenicali said the sport has no intention of returning to the country.
"I've always believed that you should never say never," Domenicali told Sport Bild magazine, per GrandPrix.com. "But in this case, I can promise for sure-we will no longer negotiate with them.
"There will be no more racing in Russia."
Alexey Titov, the CEO of Russian GP promoter ANO Rosgonki, said he expects F1 to refund payments made following the cancellation of this year's race.
This is the first year since 2014 that a race has not been held at the Sochi Autodrom.

Garoppolo remains as 49ers cut roster again
Jimmy Garoppolo
The San Francisco 49ers went through another round of roster cuts with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still in the squad.
The Niners reduced the active roster from 85 players to 80 on Tuesday but retained 30-year-old Garoppolo, their former starter who has spent all training camp working out on his own while San Francisco tries to find a trade partner.
The Niners placed cornerback Jason Verrett (knee) on the reserve physically unable to perform list and rookie defensive lineman Kalia Davis (knee) on the reserve non-football injury list. Both players no longer count against the roster and must miss at least the first four weeks.
Tight end Tanner Hudson was also released while linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel and OL Sam Schlueter were both waived.
