US House Speaker Pelosi to visit Asia
The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, confirmed on Sunday that she will visit four Asian countries this week.
Pelosi said in a statement that she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to reaffirm "strong and unshakable commitment" of the United States to its allies and friends in the region. The trip will focus on mutual security, economic partnership and "democratic governance" in the region, according to the statement.
After a refueling stop in Hawaii, the delegation visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Arizona. The delegation members paid respect "to the valiant Servicemembers who perished in the brutal attack on Pearl Harbor", she said.
Her office said in a news release that the visit would include those countries, but did not specify whether Pelosi, who is number 3 in line of presidential succession, might make other stops.
Pelosi said her delegation includes Gregory Meeks, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Mark Takano, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs; Suzan DelBene, vice-chair of the House Committee on Ways and Means; Raja Krishnamoorthi, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; and Andy Kim, a member of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.
Analysts said that Washington's "Indo-Pacific strategy" aims to save its supremacy in the region, which is harmful to the peace and stability of the world.
