President Xi Jinping has met with representatives attending the two-day national conference on work related to the handling of people's complaints and proposals, which concluded on Thursday, and extended his sincere greetings to those involved in addressing the public's complaints and proposals nationwide.

During the meeting on Wednesday, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, offered his congratulations to the exemplary groups and individuals commended at the conference, talked with them and had a group photo taken with them.

There are special government departments at county, city, provincial and national levels across China for people who need to report their complaints and proposals, and seek solutions. The public can file their complaints, grievances, suggestions and opinions with these departments through letters, emails and telephone calls.

In April, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council issued a regulation on the handling of people's complaints and proposals. A circular issued along with the regulation highlighted the importance of the work, saying that it is an important window through which an understanding of society and the people's opinions can be obtained.

Such departments should take a people-centered and problem-oriented approach, and constantly improve their capabilities to carry out their work, the circular said.

Speaking at the conference, Guo Shengkun, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, urged the officials and workers involved in dealing with people's complaints and proposals to bear in mind their political responsibility in addressing the problems and difficulties facing the public.

By doing so, they should play a greater role in upholding the legitimate rights and interests of the public and promoting public security and social stability, Guo said.
