Calligraphic award
Lanting Xu (literally "preface to poems composed at the orchid pavilion"), written by calligrapher Wang Xizhi in the semi-cursive xingshu script, in the mid-4th century, is considered one of the greatest pieces of Chinese calligraphy. It thereafter inspired the China Calligraphers Association to launch the China Calligraphy Lanting Awards, the country's top awards for the creation of and theoretical studies in calligraphy. An exhibition now at the National Art Museum of China shows such handwritten pieces by 19 artists who have received Lanting's lifetime achievement awards, such as Qi Gong, Shen Peng and Ouyang Zhongshi, hailing their industrious work to revive the cultural tradition and intellectual accumulations built over decades. The exhibition runs until April 27.

It takes viewers to the past and the frontiers of video art, capturing the differences with film and photos as an independent form. Landscape painting
Yin Zhaoyang rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a leading figure among artists of his generation who expressed loss, hesitation and the cruelties of youth. As he evolved as an artist, Yin presented a more complicated and extensive spiritual world. He has developed a highly personalized approach to landscape painting, exploring the relations between individuals and society, history and the present. Rebuilding Ideals, an exhibition at the Tang Contemporary Art Museum in Beijing's 798 Art Zone and curated by Cui Cancan, reviews Yin's creation and methods of thinking over more than 20 years. Through tracing his career, one can learn the evolution and pursuits of one artist and his generation. The exhibition runs until May 5.

Mural replicas
Murals and statues preserved in grottoes and temples along the ancient Silk Road shows cultural interactions between the East and the West over a long period. Also, they became an integral part of artistic legacies. Art from the Silk Road, an exhibition at the China National Arts and Crafts Museum and China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, pays tribute to this immense treasure trove of art and culture, as well as the joint efforts of artists and archaeologists in the research, reproduction and innovation of the media, pigments, motifs, painting techniques and styles of Silk Road art. The exhibition shows replicated mural paintings and statues from 23 caves and Buddhist temple relics, in a stretch of some 1,600 kilometers along the ancient Silk Road and dated between the 4th and 14th centuries. It ends on May 30.
