Ancient city in Shanxi anchors Tourism Day

The main venue of the 12th China Tourism Day on May 19 will be the ancient city of Pingyao, Shanxi province, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said on Tuesday.

With the theme "Feeling Chinese culture and enjoying a beautiful journey", the day will feature a series of activities in different sub-venues across the country.

Pingyao, an ancient walled city famed for its economic history and its well-maintained layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, spanning the period from 1368 to 1911, was listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997.

It represents the best-preserved county-level city of ancient China, with time-honored handicrafts, folk traditions and residences.
