Gunfire prompts move by US consulate
The US consulate in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo will close temporarily after it was hit by gunfire overnight, and trailers were set ablaze on roads downtown after a gang leader's arrest, authorities said on Monday. Shots fired at the consulate and Mexican military premises were reported amid gunfighting and pursuits in parts of the city that lie opposite the Texan city of Laredo, said the public security ministry in Tamaulipas state in a statement. Suspected gang members paralyzed traffic in Nuevo Laredo early on Monday by blocking roads with spike strips and setting fire to trailer trucks.

'Sabotage' foiled at nuclear facility
Iranian authorities have arrested members of a network linked to Israel who tried to sabotage a key nuclear enrichment plant, state media reported on Monday. The suspects "planned on sabotaging the Fordow facility and were arrested by the intelligence services of the Revolutionary Guards", reported the IRNA news agency. Also on Monday, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson said that the United States needs to make a decision to wrap up a deal to salvage the 2015 nuclear accord.

Death toll from Cyclone Gombe rises to 15
Cyclone Gombe has flooded large areas of northern and central Mozambique, killing at least 15 people, officials said on Monday. The dead include five members of the same family in the Angoche coastal area of Nampula Province, Governor Mety Gondola said. The number of injured is now at least 50, the prime minister's office announced. Gombe is the most recent of a series of cyclones that have hit southern Africa so far this year. The UN weather agency previously warned of more "high-impact tropical cyclones" that are linked to climate change hitting the region.

Auschwitz camp survivor dies at 101
Leon Schwarzbaum, a survivor of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz and a lifelong fighter for justice for the victims of the Holocaust, has died. He was 101. Schwarzbaum died early on Monday in Potsdam near Berlin, stated the International Auschwitz Committee on its website. Schwarzbaum became known to a wider audience when film director Hans Erich Viet made a movie in 2018 about his life. The Last of the Jolly Boys was shot with Schwarzbaum himself at original locations.
