Spring messages

To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the National Art Museum of China is showing selected items of art and craft from its own collection, varying from pictures to clay toys, shadow puppets, paper-cuts and flying kites. Tiger and spring are two favored motifs in Chinese handicraft. Works on show include New Year pictures made at the time-honored Yangliuqing woodblock studios in Tianjin, vivid paper-cuts by late folk artist Ku Shulan from Shaanxi province, and handmade kites by the Ha family, known for their kite-making technique. The objects preserve the lifestyle and folk customs of the past. The exhibition runs until March 23.

Featured subjects on display include winter sports, in celebration of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, industrial relics, black-and-white photography and the tiger from the Chinese zodiac. The event was launched to enrich the public's knowledge of photography and skills as digital technology has made photo-taking easier in daily life. Ink-color master

In white

Ceramics are common in Chinese homes as the country had a vibrant ceramic-making culture, and many such items are in museums. In Bianco, an exhibition of contemporary Italian ceramic works, now on in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, unfolds a different picture of ceramics. Curated by Matteo Zauli, it displays 54 works, showing diverse presentations of ceramics in the sense of contemporary art from Italy. It is a celebration of the texture of ceramics, and it examines the relationship between the medium and nature and how it influenced human civilization. The show is being held until March 17 at the Ceramic Art Avenue in Taoxichuan, Jiangxi, the old site of ceramics.

Song relics

The "intellectual-officials" of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) lived a rich cultural life-hanging paintings on their walls and inviting like-minded people to appreciate art, arranging flowers, burning fragrant incense and organizing parties to taste tea, among other things. Glamour of the Song, an exhibition at Nanjing Museum, brings together 300 artifacts to offer a glimpse of the group's "spiritual world". Part of the exhibits come from museums in Zhejiang province, where they were unearthed from Song-era tombs. The exhibition is a reflection of the dynasty's economic, social and cultural scenes. It runs until March 20.
