Question: A few days ago, some members of the "Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China" issued a statement criticizing China's policy on the Hong Kong SAR and the Law on Safeguarding National Security, and advocating sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials. What is your comment on this?

Embassy Spokesperson: These members of the so-called "Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China", including a few anti-China parliamentarians from the UK, have distorted facts and confused right and wrong. The Chinese side firmly opposes and strongly condemns their wonton, irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong affairs and blatant interference in China's internal affairs.

The rule of law is upheld in Hong Kong. The handling of the relevant personnel by the Hong Kong police is lawful and beyond reproach. Facts prove that since the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong SAR came into force, stability has been restored and law and justice have been upheld, and the legitimate rights of Hong Kong residents have been effectively safeguarded.

At the moment when Hong Kong is focusing on fighting the pandemic and protecting the wellbeing of the people, a few Western politicians, however, are busy discrediting and attacking the SAR Government and backing up the criminals. This proves once again that human rights is just a pretext they are using to stir up trouble in Hong Kong. Such attempt will surely meet the strong condemnation and firm opposition of the Chinese people.

Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, which no external forces have the right to interfere in. We urge these politicians from the West to have a right understanding of the situation, respect the facts, and stop interference of any form in Hong Kong affairs, which are China's internal affairs.
