Tianjin eye expert recognized globally in corneal laser surgery

Wang Yan, president of Tianjin Eye Hospital, ranks sixth among more than 6,000 global experts in the field of corneal laser surgery, according to "Expertise in Laser corneal surgery: Worldwide” by Expertscape.
As a pioneer in leading China's refractive surgery to the international stage, Wang has been committed to the field of visual optics and ametropia correction.
In 2011, Wang carried out a femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for the first time in China.
In recent decades, corneal refractive surgery in China has advanced alongside new developments in ophthalmology.
With the advent of excimer laser and femtosecond laser corneal refractive surgery technology, corneal refractive surgery has replaced manual surgery.
In particular, the emergence of femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) has enabled "knife free" minimally invasive surgery. At present, some 1-1.5 million such surgeries are carried out annually in China.
Ametropia, including myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, is widely prevalent.

The Lancet Global Health Commission released a comprehensive report in April 2021, emphasizing that uncorrected ametropia is the biggest avoidable visual impairment worldwide and the second largest cause of blindness after cataracts. The disease has caused blindness in 3.7 million people worldwide.
At present, glasses and refractive surgery are recognized as two ways to deal with the problem. According to an article published in The Lancet, laser corneal refractive surgery is safe, effective and predictable.
With over a century of development, Tianjin Eye Hospital is leading the country in carrying out corneal refractive surgery.
