The capital has significantly increased its winter sports facilities since it won the Olympic bid in 2015. The number of skating rinks had grown from 86 to 179, and ski resorts from 22 to 32 by the end of 2021, according to the municipal sports bureau.

China has also achieved its national goal of engaging at least 300 million people in winter sports. A National Bureau of Statistics survey showed that 346 million people had participated in winter sports between 2015 and last October.
