New rapid trains on the China-Laos Railway began operating on Monday to improve logistics efficiency and boost international trade.

According to China Railway Kunming Group, it takes only 26 hours for a train to go from Kunming, Yunnan province, to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The first rapid train — capable of 120 kilometers per hour — set off on Monday at 11:30 am. It will deliver flowers and vegetables.

Miao Yingyou, deputy director of the freight transport department of the group, said the new line can meet demand for perishable goods that must be transported fast, such as fruit, vegetables and fresh flowers. Electronics, consumer goods and other commodities get the same treatment.

The line also shortens the time needed for customs clearances and it makes arrival times more controllable, Miao said, adding that prices will be adjusted to offer tailored logistics methods for different companies and help them cut costs.

The rapid trains are available on the new line twice a week, with future frequency adjusted based on market demand.

With the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in effect, freight volume on the China-Laos Railway has grown steadily, helping to secure international supply chains.
