38 inmates died in prison fire in central Burundi

BUJUMBURA - At least 38 inmates died and 69 others injured in a fire that razed the central prison of Gitega, in Gitega Province, central Burundi, early on Tuesday, the Burundian security ministry has said.

The fire that broke out in one of the biggest detention houses of the east African nation was due to a faulty electric wire system, said the ministry on its Twitter account.
