What do we know about Omicron?

The World Health Organization classified on Nov 26 the latest variant B.1.1.529 of SARS-CoV-2 as a "variant of concern" and named it "Omicron". The new variant was first reported to the WHO from South Africa on Nov 24.

Omicron has been detected in a growing number of countries and regions worldwide. To prevent a potential pandemic resurgence fueled by the new variant, countries around the world have taken new preventive measures or tightened their existing restrictions.
