Question: The "Uyghur Tribunal" held hearings in London on allegations accusing China of committing "genocide" in Xinjiang. What is the comment of the Chinese Embassy?

Spokesperson: The so-called "Uyghur Tribunal" is neither legal nor credible. It is just another anti-China farce concocted by a few individuals with the end goal of using Xinjiang to contain China. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to it.

This so-called "tribunal" is not a judicial organ or procedure as the term suggests. It is actually patched up by people with ulterior motives and carries no weight or authority. Its establishment is completely void of any legal basis. According to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, cases involving allegations of genocide shall be tried by a competent tribunal of the State in the territory of which the act was committed, or by such international penal tribunal, the jurisdiction of which is accepted by Contracting Parties concerned. Genocide cases have been tried in courts of a few countries where the acts were committed. No country, organization or individual has the authority or power to wantonly designate that a certain country is guilty of genocide.

Based on presumption of guilt, this pseudo tribunal holds shameless "hearings" on a lie of the century in an attempt to put the label of "genocide" on Xinjiang. This tramples on the international law and insults the memory of real victims of "genocide". It is a serious provocation to the 25 million people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

The pseudo tribunal puts together a group of individuals who make a living out of demonizing China. It is funded by the World Uyghur Congress, an organization dedicated to separating Xinjiang from China. The so-called "experts" and "witnesses" include some frequently cited names such as the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) and Adrian Zenz, who have long been spreading lies about Xinjiang, as well as several "actors" who have been found to be habitually fabricating all sorts of "persecution" stories that never happened. Its "Chair" Geoffrey Nice reportedly used to be a British agent. In 2019, he served as the so-called "Chair of the China Tribunal" which staged an anti-China farce. He is known for filing frivolous lawsuits, and has close ties with various anti-China forces.

The so-called "trial" staged by such a group of people is just a despicable act of spreading lies. A lie can never become truth even if repeated a thousand times. No matter how hard they try to sell the show, they won't be able to change the fact that Xinjiang is enjoying stability, development and prosperity, and the residents of all ethnic groups there are leading happy and fulfilling lives.
