Benny Tai Yiu-ting, who is already in prison for his role in the 2014 illegal "Occupy Central" movement, will face judgment for his other crime of organizing illegal "elections" by the end of May.

It is rather absurd for a few Western media outlets to claim the incident as "political". No, it is not a political issue, but a judicial one that involves Tai's crimes that openly violated local laws.

Tai was charged because he tried to hold an illegal election on the street in July 2020, in order to get 35 or more "winners" to enter the LegCo. Anybody with the most basic sense of modern society knows how big a challenge he posed to the legal legislative power in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, where there are election laws just like in any other country or region.

Even in the US, when there is dispute in the election, all disputing sides must voice their opinions via legal means, instead of just holding "elections" outside the legal hall. The unrest caused by election dispute will be quickly done with police batons even armed soldiers, as shown in the Capitol Hill riot in January.

By making Tai's crimes into a political issue, certain Western media outlets and the political forces behind them mean to play the old trick of creating "street politicians" in Hong Kong and bringing the region into chaos. They had already done that in Venezuela in 2019 and they hope to do the same in Hong Kong SAR.

But they got it wrong. Hong Kong SAR is an unalienable part of China and there is no way for any foreign-backed political force to victimize it. Tai and his fellows are best examples to the world about what legal penalties they face.

Tai has got a fair trial for his crimes. Time for those behind him to wake up from their dreams of funding "street politicians" in Hong Kong.
