COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado-Six people were killed early on Sunday morning when a suspect opened fire at a birthday party in Colorado Springs, a city in the US state of Colorado, and then the gunman took his own life at the scene, police said.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said in a statement on Sunday they responded to a shooting call at the Canterbury Mobile Home Park at 12:18 am.

"Upon arrival, officers located six deceased adults and one adult male with serious injuries who was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," the statement said.

The police said that based on an initial analysis of evidence and preliminary interviews, they believe the mass shooting occurred when the birthday party was being held for one of the victims.

The suspect, a boyfriend of one of the female victims, drove to the residence, walked inside and began shooting people at the party before taking his own life.

Children at the scene were not injured by the suspect, police said, noting they were still investigating to determine a motive. More details would be released later.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski made some emotional remarks in the statement, saying "words fall short to describe the tragedy that took place this morning".

The shooting happened within the Canterbury Manufactured Home Community, a mobile home park of some 470 trailers and largely Latino residents on the southeast side of town, near the Colorado Springs airport, about 110 kilometers south of Denver.

The massacre was the latest in a resurgence of mass shootings in the United States after such occurrences seemed to recede during the height of coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Deadly year

Among the incidents this year was one in Boulder, Colorado, where a 21-year-old man was charged with killing 10 people in a March 22 shooting spree at a supermarket about 50 km northwest of Denver. That came less than a week after another 21-year-old gunman was accused of killing eight people at three Atlanta-area day spas.

In neighboring Canada, one person was killed in a shooting on Sunday at the main terminal at the international airport in Vancouver, authorities said.

Vancouver International Airport said earlier in a post on Twitter it was working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and responding to reports of a police incident outside the airport's main terminal. It later said on Twitter the situation had been contained.

It did not provide more details but CBC News reported police were looking for one or more suspects in connection with the shooting. Paramedics at the airport responded and two ground units were dispatched, CBC News said.
