Shooting at Indiana facility leaves 8 dead

Eight people were shot and killed in a late-night shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the shooter killed himself, police said. Several other people were injured on Thursday night when gunfire erupted at the facility near the Indianapolis International Airport, police spokesman Genae Cook said. At least four were hospitalized, including one person with critical injuries. Another two people were treated and released at the scene, Cook said. The shooter was not immediately identified, and investigators were still in the process of conducting interviews and gathering information. Cook said it was too early to tell whether the shooter was an employee at the facility.

Nation extends record rise in COVID-19 cases

India extended a record daily run of new COVID-19 infections on Friday, spurred by hundreds of positive tests at a major religious gathering, as politicians pushed ahead with election rallies against advice they could worsen the outbreak. India is battling a massive second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, with new restrictions imposed in Mumbai, New Delhi and other cities. The 217,353 new cases reported by the Health Ministry on Friday marked the eighth record daily increase in the last nine days and took total cases to nearly 14.3 million. India's case count is second only to the United States, which has reported more than 31 million infections.

BRAZIL

Annulment upheld on Lula's convictions

Brazil's full Supreme Court upheld a ruling on Thursday annulling former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's corruption convictions, clearing the way for him to run for a new presidential term next year. In an 8-3 ruling, the court upheld Justice Edson Fachin's March 8 decision quashing Lula's convictions on procedural grounds, which has upended Brazilian politics as President Jair Bolsonaro gears up to seek reelection. The ruling does not find Lula innocent. But it essentially puts prosecutors back to square one by sending the cases to another court.
