Pork sector brings home the bacon for rural people

Qin Suxian, a resident of Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, is known as an entrepreneur for her pig-feeding business.

Qin began to run business in the 1980s and opened her food company to develop the pork industry in the 2010s.

With years of work, Qin's industry has seen burgeoning development thanks to local authorities' support in the granting of brands and trademarks.

It has helped her expand the businesses and thus contributes to poverty alleviation in the autonomous region, according to Qin.

Bi Jundong, deputy director of the Administration for Market Regulation of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, said the region has conducted targeted poverty alleviation by establishing local trademarks and brands.

To date, the region has cultivated 92 geographical indication protected products and 67 GI trademarks. These include Huanjiang pork, Liuzhou snail noodles and Rong'an kumquats, Bi said.

According to Bi, Huanjiang pork is produced in the northern high-altitude area of the county and was approved as a GI product in 2003. The food product has since been purchased around the world.

In recent years, the county has ramped up efforts in developing the Huanjiang pork industry to help eliminate local poverty, Bi said.

At present, the county is home to 77 households that operate piggeries. Six of them are capable of raising more than 500 pigs each, official data show.

In addition, the county has seen 15 companies for pork processing spring up, with an annual production and processing capability of 1 million pigs. This has helped more than 4,300 disadvantaged households become lifted out of poverty.

The county has upgraded its commercial model and standardized the pig-raising pattern.
