Auction makes Louvre studio accessible for all

The Louvre Museum in Paris and auction house Christie's are collaborating on an online auction of contemporary artworks, with proceeds going toward supporting the museum's projects during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

These include a new space dedicated to artistic and cultural education to open in the fall of 2021.

The future Louvre Museum Studio will be created to welcome families, students, the vulnerable and the disabled. Christie's said activities taking place there will encourage those who sometimes feel excluded to experience the museum in a different way.

The sale will see 24 lots go under the virtual hammer, including once-in-a-lifetime experiences, bespoke services inspired by the Louvre, and pieces from contemporary artists including Johan Creten, Candida Hofer and Eva Jospin, who work closely with the museum.

There is even a chance to attend the annual examination of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa outside its display case, or to walk across the rooftops of the Palais du Louvre.

Another item on offer is an experience to explore the Louvre by night.

Jean-Luc Martinez, president and director of the Musee du Louvre, said: "This period of pandemic, which is hitting the most vulnerable in society first, makes this project even more necessary. The art community and those luxury brands with close ties to the Louvre responded instantly to our call for help and I thank them very warmly."

The Bid for the Louvre auction will be held on Christie's online platform until Dec 15.

"Everyone has been able to understand the difficulties that the pandemic has created for cultural institutions, and the Louvre is no exception," said Cecile Verdier, president of Christie's France.

"It is our great honor to support our friends at the museum through this initiative. For many of us, the Louvre is a fabulous showcase for great artistic emotions."

Brands including Cartier and Louis Vuitton will also offer items for the sale.
