Academicians and teenagers face-to-face when approaching the future of scientific innovation

The launch ceremony and first phase of a series of activities titled "Academicians and Teenagers, Face-to-Face" was held on Oct 29 at Xi'an No.3 middle school in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, Northwest China.

Jointly sponsored by the Shaanxi provincial Party committee talent office, the Xi'an municipal Party committee talent office, the Xi'an Education Bureau and the Beilin district Party committee, the series of activities aims to make full use of the advantages in science and education talents in Xi'an universities, improve the scientific and cultural literacy of young people, and cultivate patriotic feelings in the young generation.

Huang Wei, executive vice president of Northwest Polytechnic University and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to give a special lecture on "flexible electronics + smart future" for senior high school freshmen at Xi'an No.3 middle school.
Academician Huang Wei is one of the world's best-known scholars engaged in polymer LED display research and has been active in organic optoelectronics for a long time. Since the early 1990s, he has devoted himself to the research of organic optoelectronics, an international frontier discipline. He is the founder and pioneer of Organic Optoelectronics in China.
At the lecture, academician Huang talked to the students in accessible terms about flexible electronics, a new science and technology field. He pointed out that innovation driven development defines the future of a country, and disruptive scientific and technological innovation is a fundamental way to break the West's containment of China's rise.
More than 500 teachers and students in the school listened to academician Huang's lecture. Meanwhile, more than 6,000 senior high school students from Beilin district watched the lecture live online. The students asked questions about the lecture's content, and academician Huang gave cordial answers.
After the lecture, academician Huang Wei encouraged the young students to combine their personal ideals and pursuits with the development of the country and the prosperity of the nation. He urged them to keep a strong sense of scientific exploration, be down-to-earth, study hard, and strive to become pillars of the motherland, as well as contributing their wisdom to the realization of the Chinese dream and to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
"From this lecture, we learned a lot of scientific knowledge that we had not been exposed to before, such as about flexible electronics, and hunger technology," said the students of the school. "Academician Huang said that cutting-edge technology can enhance the hard power of our country. We all feel very encouraged and we have to study harder!"
In recent years, Beilin District, as the area with the most high-end talents and the most intensive educational resources in Northwest China, has adhered to the important measures taken by the Central Committee, the provincial Party committee and the municipal Party Committee regarding work, strengthening the leading role of high-end talents, and improving the training of young talents.
This "academician youth face-to-face" activity is a product of the jurisdiction's high-quality resources, and also an innovative step in the training path of scientific and technological talents.
Next, Beilin district will take today's "online + offline" classroom as a starting point to explore and innovate more kinds of activities, invite high-end talents from various fields to enter more campuses, build the "face-to-face" series of activities as the characteristic brand of Beilin talents, and take each period of activities to a high level.
