BEIJING

Yellow alert renewed for Typhoon Saudel

China's national observatory on Sunday renewed a yellow alert for Typhoon Saudel, which is expected to bring torrential downpours and strong winds to parts of China's southern coast. Saudel was observed some 95 kilometers southeast of Sanya, Hainan province, packing gusts of 90 km per hour at its center, according to the National Meteorological Center. The center has forecast the typhoon will move westward at speeds of 15 to 20 km/h and gradually weaken.

Women to be honored for being role models

The All-China Women's Federation announced Saturday that it would honor 311 women and 200 groups from across China as national-level role models for their contributions to the country. The individual winners include volleyball player Zhu Ting, Academy of Military Sciences researcher He Yuanzhi and poverty-alleviation official Leng Juzhen. The critical care medicine department at the Beijing Ditan Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, is among the groups being honored. The federation called on the honorees to make greater contributions to economic and social development.

JIANGSU

Senior Party official under investigation

Wang Like, a senior Party official in Jiangsu province, is being investigated for suspected serious violations of Party disciplinary rules and laws, the nation's top anti-graft watchdogs said on Saturday. Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and secretary of the CPC's Jiangsu provincial committee for political and legal affairs, turned himself in, according to an official statement. Wang is being investigated by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.

SHAANXI

Wild leopard spotted in Northwest China

A leopard has been spotted in a forest area in Shaanxi province, the Yingzuishi Nature Reserve said. Infrared cameras captured images of a leopard twice recently in the core protected region of the nature reserve in Zhen'an county for the first time in 40 years. Bu Shuhai, a professor at Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, said it appeared to be a healthy adult. Bu added the settlement and migration of such top predators indicate the overall ecological condition of the area is improving.
