Xinjiang border port sees rise in rail freight

Rail freight volume in Horgos, a major land pass in China bordering Kazakhstan, has already exceeded last year's total figure, local Customs authorities said on Friday. During the first three quarters of the year, 4.57 million metric tons of inbound and outbound cargo on board trains passed through Horgos in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, up 61.21 percent on a yearly basis and three times the figure from 2013 when the land port launched its rail transport service. Ma Kai, a Customs officer, said the increase in rail freight volume can be partly attributed to more China-Europe cargo trains, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic. Cross-border railway transport has played an important role in coping with the epidemic and stabilizing trade this year. Horgos used to be a major trading post along the ancient Silk Road.
