Once a member of an impoverished family, Liu Qianheng, a 42-year-old villager in Longtu village of Chenguang township in Xunwu county, Jiangxi province, now lives in a spacious two-story house.

Liu worked in Guangdong province for over a decade before returning to his hometown to attend to the elderly in 2014. With the help of the local government, he contracted an orchard and started to grow navel oranges, a local specialty.

With over 900 orange trees at present, Liu has much more money in his pocket than when he worked in Guangdong, and has lifted his family out of poverty. Besides his estate in the village, he has also purchased a car and property in the county.

"When I worked in Guangdong province, I didn't have much savings," Liu recalled. "I am able to make more money now, and working hours are more flexible. Even during drier seasons like last year, my orchard recorded an annual yield of over 20,000 kg, making profit of about 100,000 yuan ($14,620)."
