In recent years, Tianjin government has been energetically developing plans to create new green areas, which are expected to protect the environment in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

According to a local government news conference on Friday, in 2019 the port city witnessed the start of its plan to establish a green ecological area totaling 736 square kilometers, located in the central area of Tianjin and its costal Binhai New Area, incorporating five districts of the city.

This area is crossed with rivers and lakes and serves important ecological functions.

Based on the ecological plan, 65 percent of the area will be covered with water and green plants by next year, and this proportion will increase to 70 percent by 2035.

The efforts echo the conviction of central government that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, in order to adhere to the path of green and sustainable development.

To ensure the goal is achieved, local government has established a leading group, with 24 officers guiding the progress of the project.

Other plans for water systems, road networks, tourism and industrial park governance have been made in support of the construction of the ecological area.

A hefty special fund of 40 billion yuan($5.76 billion) has been set up by local government to carry out key projects such as repairing land, planting trees and cleaning rivers.

Jinnan district is the main focus of the policy, accounting for 44.8 percent of the planned ecological area. It has witnessed 31,200 mu of newly-planted afforestation, with the planting of more than 2.12 million trees and shrubs.
