He Bingyan

In 1935, during the Long March, a tactical maneuver by the Red Army to evade the Kuomintang army, He's right arm was shattered by a projectile and had to be amputated with a saw disinfected in boiling water. There was no anesthetic, so he bit on a rolled towel-the pain was so severe that the towel was shredded.

Yin Yufen

In 1947, Yin led soldiers from the company in a stand that lasted a day and a night to defend the revolutionary base in Yan'an, Shaanxi province. He and 18 comrades repelled six consecutive attacks. Despite a shattered right heel and shrapnel lacerations to his lower abdomen that saw his intestines protrude through the flesh, Yin and his soldiers defended the base until victory was achieved.

Zhan Yaping

Zhan was hit by an artillery shell during a battle. He survived, but was left paraplegic, and his left arm was amputated, along with two fingers of his right hand. This year, despite his advanced age, Zhan actively participated in COVID-19 prevention and control work in Jiangsu province, helping to register residents' information and check people's temperatures.

Xie Guanyou

As a captain in a medical team, Xie repeatedly rushed through a blockade to rescue wounded comrades in battle, even after being seriously injured himself.

His intestines protruded from his body so he used a steel helmet to hold them in and continued fighting until he was hit by a grenade. When his body was cremated, 84 pieces of shrapnel were found in his ashes.

Xie left a letter to his 8-month-old son, Junjun, in which he wrote: "When you read this letter, you will know that your father dedicated his life to defending the frontier and the construction of our country. You should feel glorious, happy. Don't feel sad. Turn grief into strength. Goodbye, my dearest son. When you grow up, you must live a good life. Take good care of the elderly and your mother. Don't forget that you are the son of a revolutionary martyr and don't do anything that would harm the Communist Party or the people."
