Gudni Johannesson re-elected as president of Iceland

HELSINKI - Gudni Johannesson, incumbent president of Iceland, has been re-elected for another four-year term in office, according to the voting results announced on Sunday.

The voting took place on Saturday with a turnout reaching 66.9 percent. The final results showed that Johannesson, 52, defeated the main challenger Gudmundur Franklin Jonsson with an overwhelming 92.2 percent of the vote.

Previous analysis showed that the presidential election would not be affected much by the COVID-19 epidemic. Voters were required to keep two meters away from each other at polling stations, according to local media.

So far, Iceland has reported some 1,800 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 10 coronavirus-related deaths.

Johannesson was first elected as president of Iceland in 2016, becoming the country's youngest president since its independence in 1944.

In Iceland's political system, president has no term limits. The position is largely symbolic and with limited power, but president has the power to veto legislation or submit it to a referendum.
