Businessman held after 7 killed in fire accident

Seven people were killed after a fire broke out on Wednesday morning in Shuangfeng county, Hunan province, according to the local publicity department. The fire, which occurred around 10 am at a logistics transfer station, was extinguished about two hours later, the department said. The owner of the logistics business has been put under police control. The local government has launched an investigation into the accident, according to the department.

GUANGDONG

Farmers' markets inspected for COVID-19

South China's Guangdong province has started COVID-19-prevention inspections at over 1.9 million dining spots and 5,000 farmers' markets in the province, local authorities said on Wednesday. So far, more than 8,000 samples collected from local markets and workers since June 13 have been tested for COVID-19, with all of the results showing negative for the virus, according to the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

New campaign targets infringement, piracy

A special nationwide campaign to crack down on online copyright infringement and piracy has been launched, authorities announced on Wednesday. The 2020 Sword Net campaign, jointly initiated by the National Copyright Administration, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security and the Cyberspace Administration of China, is the 16th special action targeting copyright infringement and piracy on the internet since 2005.It will last four months, from June to October, and focus on five key areas in response to the emergence of some new problems. Authorities will crack down severely on infringements related to short videos, filming in cinemas and the spread of pirated film and television works through streaming media software.

XINJIANG

Region invests billions to aid poverty relief

The Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has invested more than 40.5 billion yuan ($5.7 billion) into poverty alleviation projects this year, local authorities said. The funds have been injected into 5,286 projects covering multiple areas, including industrial development and employment, according to the regional poverty alleviation and development office. Xinjiang also increased financial support to poverty-stricken households. It has extended loans to 117,800 impoverished households this year, totaling over 3.74 billion yuan.
