Shortly after China Daily interviewed volunteer drivers, news spread online that one of them, He Hui, had died of novel pneumonia on Monday.

News portal The Paper confirmed the death of the 54-year-old from Wuhan the next day.

His relatives said He was the "pillar" of a family of more than 40. He loved giving assistance, so he volunteered to offer his services as a driver because he wanted to do his best to help the people of Wuhan.

Four or five days before he died, He started to develop a cough and fever, so he isolated himself before being sent to a hospital. His fellow volunteers said online they were shocked and saddened by news of his death and expressed their condolences.

One of the drivers, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that his wife had argued with him after hearing that He had died.

The driver added that he and many of his colleagues were not afraid of death, but were the main breadwinners for their families.

His own family members, who had initially supported him being a volunteer, said they no longer wanted him to do such work.
