Tipsy boss leaves bonuses in taxi

An inebriated boss who left his workers' end-of-year bonuses in a cab has thanked a taxi company for returning the money. The man, surnamed Song, recently arrived at the company in Baoshan district to present the taxi driver who returned 100,000 yuan ($14,400) in cash with a "thank you" banner. Song had attended a banquet on Dec 28 and imbibed a lot of alcohol. He told police he had earlier withdrawn the money from the bank to pay his construction workers year-end bonuses before the Lunar New Year on Jan 25. The taxi driver handed in the cash to his company the next morning, which Song recovered with the help of police.

'Very angry' employee in forklift rampage

A 60-year-old man who went on a rampage with a forklift because he was not invited to company dinners is due to face court. Police said the man, surnamed Deng, would soon be prosecuted for vandalism. Deng, a forklift driver at a logistics company in Songjiang district, went on his violent spree on Sep 30, police said. He told police he was "very angry" because the company and his colleagues had not invited him to any company dinner parties in the past four years. Police said Deng ran amok in two warehouses, damaging walls and equipment. The damage bill reached more than 10,000 yuan ($1,440). He was detained and placed in detention after his colleagues sought police help. A prosecutor said Deng has not suffering from any mental disorders and should be held responsible for his actions.

Didi driver chases SUV on fire

The driver of an SUV sped away from a well-meaning Didi driver on Monday who was trying to alert her that her vehicle was on fire. The driver, surnamed Hu, was taking a passenger to Guangzhou's southern railway station when he noticed flames underneath the vehicle in front of him. The female driver of the SUV did not know her car was on fire and sped off. Hu accelerated after her, honking his horn and shouting at her for more than 100 meters. However, she ignored him and kept driving. When the woman stopped to seek police help, Hu pulled up and told her that her car was on fire. No one was injured, and Hu was given a 500 yuan ($72) reward by Didi.

Wanted: Nanny for arts student daughter

The parents of a university arts student have come under fire for trying to hire a live-in nanny to look after their daughter. The mother, surnamed Liu, placed an online ad offering a 4,000 yuan ($576) monthly salary for a nanny to wash, cook, clean and look after her daughter. The parents rented a two-bedroom apartment for their daughter who is enrolled at a university in Xiangyang, local media reported. Liu said her daughter had never done housework. She and her husband, both businesspeople, were too busy to look after her. The family was criticized by some netizens for pampering their daughter, while others said Liu was a good mother.

Drunken dad tries to blame son, 10, for crash

A drunken driver who tried to make his 10-year-old son take the blame for a recent road accident in Heichi has been placed under house detention. The driver, surnamed Wei, knocked down a scooter and injured the rider, who was treated in hospital. When police arrived at the scene, Wei, who had been at a banquet, said his son was driving the car and had caused the accident. However, Wei later admitted to drunken driving and causing the accident after police reviewed surveillance footage. He told police he tried to blame his son as he thought the boy would not be charged as he is a minor.

Grandma hangs boy from rope to save cat

An elderly woman who dangled her 7-year-old grandson from a fifth floor balcony with a rope while he "rescued" a cat has defended her actions. The hair-raising incident in Baishun Street, Nanchong, on Monday, was captured on video and the gasps of onlookers can be clearly heard. The woman, surnamed Tang, lowered the boy from the fifth floor in a residential block onto the awning of a third floor balcony. The boy, who claimed he wasn't afraid during the mission, managed to clamber on to the fourth floor to try and grab a cat sitting on a balcony ledge. He failed to stuff the cat in a bag, but was eventually hoisted to safety while holding the feline. Tang rejected criticism from netizens that she did not care about her grandson's life and added she knew what she was doing. However, she acknowledged that what she had done was wrong and promised not to do it again.

Giant Mickey Mouse welcomes the New Year

An art teacher from Ruiguang Primary School in Baicheng used a shovel and his hands to create a huge Mickey Mouse figure in the snow to celebrate the New Year. The artwork, about the size of a football field, has attracted many visitors to the school since Jan 1, according to media reports. It depicts Mickey Mouse with four balloons in his hand and displaying the year 2020. Dou Hang said he created the special artwork to celebrate the Year of the Rat. He said it took a day and a half to etch the figure in the snow. The depiction of the Disney mouse has won praise from students, Dou's colleagues and visitors to the school.

Homeless canine recruited as police dog

A scrawny homeless canine has been made a police dog in Nanjing, after it was adopted by officers at Fuzimiao station. The dog was found by an auxiliary police officer in a street near the station early this month. It's believed to have been homeless for some time and was thin and weak when found. After being cared for at the station, it was recently recruited as a police dog by the city's public security bureau.

Traveler in a rush dives into X-ray scanner

A man, surnamed Fu, recently surprised security guards and other travelers when he climbed into an X-ray machine at the city's West Railway Station. Fu said he did not want to empty the pockets of a large coat he was wearing and thought it was easier to go inside the X-ray scanner at a security checkpoint. He stumbled to his feet once he had passed through and was detained by security guards. Fu was later released by police after being educated on the correct way to pass through a security checkpoint.
