Film: Sheep Without a Shepherd tops box office
Chinese crime drama Sheep Without a Shepherd took the domestic box-office crown during its opening week, grossing more than 218 million yuan ($31.13 million). Malaysian director Sam Quah helms the film, a remake of the 2013 Malayalam thriller Drishyam. The film depicts a suspenseful and sinister story of a father trying to cover up his daughter's crime of manslaughter following a struggle between the family and the police.
Biz: Segway-Ninebot unveils smart e-bikes
Chinese high-tech startup Segway-Ninebot unveiled its brand-new electric bikes on Tuesday in Beijing. These include the Ninebot e-moped and Ninebot e-scooter, along with two conceptual models, the Ninebot e-scooter T and Ninebot Apex. Equipped with a keyless system, users can lock and unlock the vehicle automatically. The smart battery management system enables intelligent parallel connections and fast charging. Aided by GPS, Beidou Navigation Satellite System and base stations, people can keep track of the e-scooter and e-moped at any time.
Society: Work starts on Shanghai opera house
Work on the Shanghai Grand Opera House began on Wednesday. The building will have three performance halls of various capacities, 10 rehearsal halls, 54 rehearsal rooms, as well as exhibition and educational spaces. The 2,000-seat main auditorium will have state-of-the-art technology and superior acoustics. The project is expected to take four to five years to complete. The design and construction team is formed by East China Architectural Design and Research Institute, Norway's Snohetta, an architecture and design company, Nagata Acoustics and Britain's Theater Projects Consultants.
Health: Scientists say eating chilies is good
Researchers in Italy have found that regularly eating chili peppers can lower the risk of death from heart disease and stroke. Their study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Participants were monitored over a span of eight years. Researchers found the risk of dying from a heart attack was 40 percent lower among those eating chili peppers at least four times a week. The study also found that death from stroke was cut by more than 50 percent. Some outside experts, however, caution against reading too much into the results.
