Tianjin has been improving its infrastructure for its wetland reserves, with the reserves' functions gradually restored, according to a meeting by Tianjin Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources on Dec 16.

Officials said Tianjin’s ecological efforts have been recognized by the “authoritative judge” -- migrating birds—who favor the spot.

Since 2013, four wetland natural reserves have been added to Tianjin, following state approval in the city’s Wuqing, Baodi and Jizhou districts -- with areas ranging from 249 hectares to 5,582 hectares.

Welcoming up to one million of migrant birds annually, Tianjin has recognized the increasing importance of providing sanctuary for migrating birds, with its abundant wetland resources successfully restored and protected.

Beidagang Wetland has been listed as a national key wetland and is applying for the status as an international key one. In 2020 it will apply to be included as a natural world heritage site, to further enhance its international profile.

According to statistics, to date the Tianjin Wildlife Rescue, Domestication and Breeding Center has received 2,859 wild animals and birds. Staff said birds accounted for more than 90 percent.

Officials said efforts have been made to build a green ecological barrier between Binhai New Area and downtown Tianjin.

By this June, 3,260 mu or 2.17 square kilometers of a green belt had been built, 8.13 percent more than the 3,015 mu target set by Binhai for the 2018-19 period.

Groups of migrating birds make their way to rest at Tianjin’s wetland.

Many birds now call the wetland their home.
