Society: Planetarium starts Tibet operation
The first planetarium in the Tibet autonomous region has opened for a trial run. Located in the Lhasa Economic and Technological Development Zone, the planetarium covers about 8,000 square meters. With an investment of 186 million yuan ($27 million), the planetarium uses high-tech means such as interactive projection and virtual reality to help visitors learn about the mysteries of the universe. The trial operation is scheduled to last to April.
Food: Beijing unveils suburban dish list
Forty gourmet snacks and dishes have made the list of the most popular suburban foods chosen by Beijing residents. The list was initiated by the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau and the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau, and covered local specialties, snacks and flower delicacies. More than 3 million residents in the capital participated in the online vote. Tofu banquets from the northeastern district of Yanqing, a fish feast from northeastern Miyun district and chrysanthemum dishes from northeastern Pinggu district ranked high on the list. The list is part of Beijing's wider efforts to show what the suburbs and rural fringes of the city have to offer, and encourage more people to enjoy the charm of the countryside.
Film: Only Cloud Knows to hit big screen
Following the runaway hit Youth, director Feng Xiaogang is returning to the big screen with his latest directorial effort Only Cloud Knows. The film is set to hit Chinese theaters on Friday. Inspired by a true story of Feng's friends, the film chronicles the life of a couple of Beijing emigrants who operate a restaurant in Clyde, a small town in New Zealand. Through flashbacks, the story unravels their past: The two young people fell in love when they both rent a room in Mrs. Lin's house in Auckland. After they win a big amount of money in a local casino, they get married and move to Clyde to strive for a new future. The wife gets diagnosed with cancer and dies after surgery. To fulfill her wishes, the husband travels 15,000 kilometers to leave her ashes in four different places, including scattering them in a sea with whales and burying them in her hometown.
