Films: Parasite wins top award from critics

South Korean film Parasite turned out to be a big winner on Sunday at the 45th annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, taking home three top prizes. The black comedy thriller won best picture of the year, while the film's director Bong Joon-ho was awarded best director of 2019 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Song Kang-ho won the best supporting actor award. Parasite follows the members of a poor household scheming to become employees of a much wealthier family by posing as unrelated, highly-qualified individuals. It became the first South Korean film to win the coveted Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in May.

Trends: Candidates for Chinese buzzwords

Candidates for the 2019 Chinese buzzwords have been released, with "love", "stability", "my people and my country", "5G" and "blockchain" on the shortlist. The buzzword selection is an annual event jointly launched by the National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center and the Commercial Press. It aims to depict China and the world in the past year with one Chinese character or phrase. The result will be unveiled on Dec 20. The first buzzword selection was held in 2006.

Many netizens said that Li has enhanced the influence of Chinese culture abroad. But some questioned that her videos are about daily life, and therefore she is not a symbol of Chinese culture. Society: Shandong bridge wins major prize

As the world's first curved glass bridge without cables, Tanxishan Glass Bridge in Zibo, Shandong province, topped the Structural Awards 2019 for Pedestrian Bridges. The 2.45-meter-wide bridge deck spans 117 meters in length, with a suspended height of 101 meters. Its maximum load capacity is 3.5 metric tons per square meter. Designed by the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University, the bridge adopts the installation method of a rotating bridge deck and arch frame through 3D laser scanning and positioning technology.
