Society: China Post to issue rat-year stamps
China Post began to issue an annual set of postal stamps in 1980 to mark each of the 12 zodiac animals that matched the year. The Year of the Rat stamps, to be issued on Jan 5, are designed by Han Meilin, an artist and designer whose zodiac sign is also the rat. The set of two stamps show rats in a signature playful style. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the zodiac stamps, China Post has also launched a series of related merchandise products.
Rankings: Top property developers listed
The Sweetome Group Hurun Property Rich List 2019 has been released in Shanghai. This is the 14th consecutive list that ranks the top 50 property developers in China. The list calculates the wealth of the property industry's entrepreneurs as of Aug 15. The wealth of the top 50 exceeded 1.5 trillion yuan ($213 billion), with an average wealth of 31.1 billion yuan, near the historic peak two years ago. Shenzhen, Guangdong province, stayed at the top position, boasting the largest number of property developers' headquarters, followed by Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, which are home to 70 percent of property developers in the country.
Films: Ad Astra flies onto nation's screens
Ad Astra, starring Brad Pitt as an astronaut seeking his missing father, hit Chinese mainland theaters-including more than 660 Imax theaters-on Thursday. The film was shortlisted for the Golden Lion award at the annual 76th Venice Film Festival. A directorial effort from James Gray, the film displays spectacular views of the solar system through the protagonist's interstellar odyssey from the Earth to the moon, then traveling from Mars to Neptune.
Culture: 2020 Golden Globes nomination list
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards on Monday. Netflix ruled the nominations for the 77th Golden Globes, scoring nods for Marriage Story and The Irishman on the film front and The Crown and Unbelievable for television. Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story landed a leading six nominations for film, followed by Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with five each. Ricky Gervais will host the 2020 ceremony on Jan 5 live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
