Dragging down China with turmoil in Hong Kong simply illusion

Despite Beijing's strong and repeated opposition, the US Senate on Tuesday passed the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.

By passing the bill, the Senate has not only shown ruthless indifference to the already chaotic situation on the ground and the need to end violence and restore order, but also tried to embolden the rioters in Hong Kong in order to serve their own political interests.

Anti-China politicians in Washington continue to collude with extremists in Hong Kong and grossly meddle in China's internal affairs. They are intentionally causing turmoil in the international financial hub in a bid to slow China's development. But history clearly shows that such attempts will fall flat.

Some US officials' ineffective campaign against the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is one example. Despite they describing the China-proposed initiative as "predatory economics," it still enjoys growing global recognition. The reason is simple: the BRI has brought real benefits to all its participating partners.

And in the case of Hong Kong, China-hardliners in Washington will ultimately fail.

One major reason is that their plot goes against the aspirations and vital interests of the majority of Hong Kong residents. Their interference in Hong Kong has resulted in growing condemnation by the international community.

These sanctimonious opportunists appear to worry about the future of Hong Kong. Don't be fooled. They merely care about the future of their own political careers. Their poor and clumsy tactics won't fool sober minds worldwide.

The Chinese government has made it crystal clear that it will take resolute countermeasures in response to US intervention in Hong Kong and safeguard its own sovereignty, security and development rights. Such determination can in no way be underestimated.

For those who have long hold the illusion of containing and making trouble for China, it's time to return to reality.
