Transport aircraft makes emergency landing in western Ukraine, kills 5

KIEV - Five people were killed and three others seriously injured due to the emergency landing of an Antonov-12 cargo plane near the Lviv international airport in western Ukraine on Friday morning, according to the state emergency service.

"As of 9:00, it was found out that there were eight people on board, including seven crew members and one person accompanying the cargo," the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on its website.

According to local media, the plane flew from the Spanish resort city of Vigo to the Turkish city of Istanbul and landed in Kiev for refueling.

At 7:10 am, the rescue service "101" received a message saying that the An-12 transport plane disappeared from the radar some 13.7 km to the Lviv international airport.

At 7:29 am, one crew member contacted the airport saying that the plane made an emergency landing.

At 7:46 am, the plane was found at a distance of 1.5 km from the runway.

No burning was observed. Lviv region police officers were working at the crash site, according to the emergency service.
