Northeast China’s Jilin province has recently announced a plan to promote household garbage sorting in its prefecture-level cities, according to the local authorities.

According to the plan, household waste sorting in the prefecture-level cities will be divided into four phases.

Before the end of 2019, cities should have completed implementation plans for sorting of all categories of household refuse and comprehensively begun household garbage sorting processing systems.

Before the end of 2020, cities should have basically established relevant regulations and systems for garbage sorting and achieved full coverage of waste sorting in public institutions. At least one street in prefecture-level cities should have been basically transformed into a waste sorting demonstration area. In addition, Changchun city will have basically established a household waste sorting system.

Before the end of 2022, all cities should have basically established household waste sorting systems. At least one district in the prefecture-level cities will have achieved full coverage of waste sorting, and at least one street in other districts should have been basically turned into a waste sorting demonstration area.

Before the end of 2025, the cities should all have installed a household waste sorting system.

According to the blueprint all departments should put an emphasis on the implementation of household garbage sorting work -- taking steps such as promoting related education in schools, organizing voluntary activities to promote garbage sorting and encouraging more families to participate, officials said.
