Zhang started to grow peppers in 2017 through a village agriculture cooperative. When he and some villagers saw the growing harvest, they gave credit to the policies the government made, and thought it would be a good idea to express their happiness by using the peppers to form the national flag.

"The red pepper is similar to the color of the national flag. And the stars can be made of corn," Zhang said.

Zhang and other villagers made the flag outside the pepper warehouse. They shot and uploaded videos on short video platform Tik Tok and their WeChat moments.

"This one is only a trial. We will make a bigger one after the Farmers' Harvest Festival," Zhang said.
