Requirements for foreigners holding foreign driving licenses to drive a motor vehicle in China
According to relevant Chinese laws and regulations, when temporary inbound persons holding foreign driving licenses drive a motor vehicle taken to China temporarily, they shall apply for a temporary driver’s license to traffic administration authorities of public security organs in the municipalities directly under the Central Government or municipalities divided into districts where the entry or departure takes place within two days after their entry to China.
In case they drive a leased Chinese motor vehicle, they shall apply for a temporary driver’s license to traffic administration authorities of public security organs in the municipalities directly under the Central Government or municipalities divided into districts where the motor vehicle lease unit is located within two days after their entry to China.
When applying for a temporary driver's license, it’s unnecessary for them to take an exam, but they shall accept appropriate study of laws and regulations on road traffic safety.
Foreigners can lease motor vehicles or non-motor vehicles in China, but they shall have obtained a Chinese driving license (including a temporary driving license) when driving a motor vehicle.
Drivers holding a temporary driving license can only drive a leased car.
