Samye has a history over 1,200 years, founded sometime between 765 and 780. The overall design was based on Odantapuri Temple in Bihar, India and laid out in a way representing Buddhist cosmology. A central temple had other temples placed around it in two concentric circles, meant to represent the oceans and continents surrounding a central holy mountain.
