Vietnamese party chief introduced as candidate for president

HANOI - All members of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) on Wednesday agreed to introduce CPVCC General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as a candidate for president to replace Tran Dai Quang who died on Sept 21, Vietnam News Agency reported.

On Wednesday, the second working day of the ongoing 8th session of the CPVCC, the committee reached unanimous consensus on introducing Nguyen Phu Trong for Vietnam's National Assembly, the country's top legislature, to elect him as president at the 6th session of the 14th National Assembly.

The 6th session is scheduled to be held from Oct 22 to Nov 20.

Nguyen Phu Trong was born on April 4, 1944 in the rural district of Dong Anh, the capital city of Hanoi.

He is a professor, and holds a PhD in politics with specific field of party construction.

He has been a member of the CPVCC's Political Bureau since 1997. He served as chairman of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011.

He was elected as CPVCC general secretary in 2011, and re-elected as general secretary in 2016.

Specifically, he has been a member of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th CPVCC, and a member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th CPVCC's Political Bureau.
