The United States did not show either sincerity or goodwill by imposing 10 percent tariffs on about $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday.

“Dialogue and negotiation on the basis of equality, good faith and mutual respect are the only viable way out for China-US trade frictions,” he said at a regular media conference in Beijing.

A healthy and stable China-US relationship conforms to the fundamental interests of both countries, and is also the wide aspiration of the international community, he said, and China is willing to work with the US for this goal.

“Unfortunately, the current unilateralism and protectionism adopted by the US cannot be accepted by China,” Geng said.

As for what kind of countermeasures China will take, he said China will announce at an appropriate time, but refused to comment on any assumption.
