Edible dough figurines have rejuvenated an aspect of traditional Chinese culture and won the intangible cultural heritage's successor a big fortune.
Wei Honggang, an inheritor of dough modeling in Central China's Henan province, has worked on improving the process and developing edible raw materials in order to promote the traditional craftsmanship. Kids in modern society, he said, "know Plasticine, but have no knowledge of dough models and figurines".
Now the efforts from the 47-year-old craftsman have paid off, bringing the craft to classrooms for tens of thousands of students. Due to the rarity of edible materials for dough modeling, unlike Plasticine, he also has numerous deals at home and abroad for dozens of tons of materials.
