XI'AN  -- State Grid, China's principal power supplier, has transmitted 11.634 billion kwh of electricity in January to help ease power shortages in central and eastern China due to the adverse weather.

The central and eastern regions of China received a series of intensive rain and snowstorms this year. Shanghai, and central China's Henan, Hubei, and Hunan provinces all required more electricity than they could generate.

To meet the demand, the Xi'an-based northwest branch of the State Grid utilized its rich new energy resources, mainly wind and solar power.

The branch did not specify how much of the 11.634 billion kwh is clean energy, however, it did cite Feb 8 as a record day -- 501 million kwh of clean energy was generated, nearly 29 percent of what has been consumed that day. The proportion was almost 10 percentage points higher than the daily average last year.

The new energy sources have helped rationalize the energy structure in the northwest and support the power supply in the central and eastern regions.
