First homemade aircraft carrier launched
China's first domestically developed aircraft carrier was launched in April. The ship is the largest and most sophisticated surface vessel China has ever built. It is expected to be commissioned in 2020, when it will become the flagship of China's naval vessels.
Currently, the People's Liberation Army Navy operates a sole aircraft carrier, Liaoning, originally a Soviet-era vessel and refitted in China.
