The snake who loved a man

The romance between the serpent-woman Bai and the impoverished scholar Xu Xian has been adapted on stage, television and the big screen a number of times. Hong Kong Dance Company has turned the story into a spectacular dance drama - Lady White of West Lake - which opens tonight.
The production explores the theme of love across the boundaries set by societal norms and the extent to which someone in love might be prepared to go in order to transcend them.
Wishing to experience the world of human beings, a white snake takes on the appearance of a beautiful girl. Emerging from the West Lake, she meets a scholar, and for the first time gets a taste of what love is. A vindictive monk, Fa Hai, finds out about the romance and is determined to tear them apart. The resolute Bai defends her love with dignity and courage, even if it means moving heaven and earth.
The show has been directed by the ace dancer Yang Yuntao, with Xie Yin as associate choreographer.
Several Lady White-themed panel discussions, videos showing a bit of backstage drama during rehearsals and a roving exhibition are also on offer at various venues. Panelists include the writer Hon Lai-chu, and the academic Ho Kin-chun Louis, apart from the choreographers. Daisy Li moderates the sessions.
