2007-2011 Snapshots of a city, Part 3

The third quarter of the last 20 years since the founding of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region seems all about disasters, as these images shot mostly by China Daily Hong Kong staff photographer Edmond Tang seem to suggest. Fires broke out in congested marketplaces, blazing for hours. Buildings collapsed like a pack of cards. A bus fell off a flyover, mowing down smaller vehicles. With memories of the SARS crisis still fresh on people's minds, caution was the watchword when it came to keeping the avian flu out.
Even when the chips are down, Hong Kong loves a good party. The city's streets overflowed with people, joining in the celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China in great style and with a lot of feeling.
