China photo contest judges whittle down more than 30,000 entries to 63 winners

The 10th China International Press Photo contest unveiled its photograph of the year on April 15. The winner, Typhoon Haiyan, is the black-and-white image of part of the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines last year by Canadian photographer Kevin Frayer. It was selected from submissions by more than 30,000 images from more than 3,000 photographers from 60 countries. A jury of 13 professionals from different countries took four days to decide 63 prizes in eight categories. Since the China Photojournalists Society initiated the contest in 2005, it has become a significant annual photojournalism event. "CHIPP has offered a great platform to show works and exchange ideas," this year's contest chairperson, Huang Wen, says. "Prizes salute them, bringing encouragement and respect to those who are still working hard in the profession."
