Villagers Dorje (right), 41, and Beima Norbu, 39, stand at Dexing bridge across the Yarlun Zangbo River. They still follow the old tradition of carrying knives in their belts to cut wood.

Xia Bingshan (right), 18, an ethnic Deng, plays with his friends on a mountain in Medog. Deng people, commonly known as Deng Ba in China, belong to an ancient ethnic group.

He Qingrong, 38, holds a newly-bought duck in Medog. She says prices there are higher than in her hometown in Sichuan province: this duck cost her 100 yuan ($16, 12 euros). She went to Medog four years ago and works as a carpenter at construction sites.

Villagers carry daily necessities on their backs to cross a mountain in Medog. Though the weather is hot, local people are used to wearing rainshoes to prevent leech bites.
