This is China's 4th consecutive year as the top ranking country in the number of applications accepted per year, according to a report released at a symposium yesterday.

The symposium was held by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce on October 18 to mark the 20th anniversary of China's admission to the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks.

Despite the global economic recession, international trademark applications by Chinese enterprises in 2008 increased by 8% from 2007, to 1,574 cases, the report said.

China entered the system in October 1989 and, in the past 20 years, the trademark applications have significantly helped Chinese enterprises in attaining global reach, said Fu Shuangjian, vice director of the administration, at the symposium.
